Sizwe Nxasana

Chairperson, National Students Financial Aid Scheme

Sizwe Nxasana is the Chairperson of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). He is a Chartered Accountant and obtained a Bachelor of Accounting Science. In fact, Nxasana was one of the first black Chartered Accountants in South Africa. In 1989 he started Sizwe & Co, an accounting firm that has become a part of Sizwe Ntsaluba Gobodour. From 1991-1994, Nxasana worked as Absa Group Limited’s National President and from 1998-2005 he served as Telkom SA Limited’s CEO. From 2003-2015 Mr Nxasana worked for FirstRand as their Non-Executive Director, their CEO and their Executive Director at different times. In 2015, Blade Nzimande (Minister of Higher Education and Training) appointed Nxasana to his current position, hoping that Nxasana could improve the state project. Ntuthuko Makhombothi, President of South African Students’ Congress, said of Nxasana’s appointment: “We trust that he will be able to stabilise the institution and ensure recoveries from beneficiaries and push management to excellence.”
